PAT testing questions we get asked about how often to test, what we check, microwave leakage, labels, and prices in West Yorkshire.
What is PAT testing?
Portable appliance testing is a set of visual checks and electrical tests on plug-in equipment. It helps show that appliances are being maintained in a safe condition, which matters under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. PAT testing itself is not named in the law as a compulsory annual ritual — it is the practical way most workplaces keep records.
How often should appliances be tested?
It depends on the type of equipment, who uses it, and the environment. An office PC may need less frequent testing than a site tool or a kettle in a busy kitchen. We can advise a sensible interval when we see what you have.
What do you test with?
A Seaward PrimeTest 350. It covers earth continuity, insulation, leakage, IEC leads, socket wiring checks, load measurement and more, with results stored for the report.
Do you test microwaves?
Yes. As well as the usual PAT checks, we carry out microwave leakage tests around the door, seals and casing. The pass limit we work to is 5 mW/cm² at 50 mm from the oven, in line with BS EN 60335-2-25 (50 W/m²). If it exceeds that, it is failed and should be taken out of service.
Do you label everything?
Yes. Pass and fail labels go on tested items during the visit, and you get a written report afterwards.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. Up to 35 tests are £70 for 3.5 hours on site. Extra tests after that are £1.20 each.
Which areas do you cover?
West Yorkshire from our Halifax base: Calderdale, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds, Wakefield and nearby towns. Further afield can be arranged.
Can you work around opening hours?
Yes. We schedule visits to suit shops, schools and offices so testing does not stop the day if we can help it.
